Her father was a rich businessman and her mother was an opera singer. The daughter of a Spanish mother and Lebanese father, Salma was a spoilt child. She did her earlier education at New Orleans convent school,and later attended Mexico City's Universidad Iberoamericana  where she really felt that it's time to take acting seriously. At the age of 23, she got her first opportunity in Teresa (1989), which made her star in Mexico. Her brother Sami Hayek is a designer with his own line of products.
